My Friend the Painter<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/p>\r\n

53 years and still counting<\/span><\/p>\r\n

No psychoanalysing here<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Students at Christchurch Technical Institute in the 70s<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Half the class here<\/span><\/p>\r\n

400 portraits and still counting<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Geoff always did take up a lot of space<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A class reunion in Gore<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Buggar \u2018Art\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Eating Boston buns and apple turnovers<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Always an assignment due<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Weekends away mucking around in old cars<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Kind knowledgeable tutors \u2013 Barry Cleavin for one<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A course for the ages<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Both applied to work at the Press in Christchurch<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One became a graphic designer<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The other told to buggar off <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Because she would have to climb mountains in the wet<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Euan on to university study<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Me photographer at Correspondence Institute<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He goes to Sydney<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I go to Brisbane then Britain<\/span><\/p>\r\n

My plastic collection begins <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Euan adds decorated pieces<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Letters and meet ups, texting now<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Two careers in the arts<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Just as well we lived in different places<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Euan could be painting the places we drive by \u2013 not a helicopter or a rope in sight<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And I could be painting an old woman in the landscape<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He with his picnic table<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And me with my ironing board.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I\u2019m very proud Euan asked me to speak at this opening. I\u2019m glad to celebrate our long friendship and his many kindnesses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We continue to have much in common in our life in the arts \u2013 the highs and the lows \u2013 successful exhibitions, access to special places, support of family and friends\u2026..really painting is part addiction, a lot of humping (dont get excited), part joy, part hard work and part bad backs.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
