Typically I am asked one of these 3 questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Do you do this for a hobby? (they don&#8217;t think much of your work)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Are you a student? (well the work isn&#8217;t too bad but you are obviously still learning)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Do you exhibit or sell your paintings? (think your work is pretty good)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.janetdewagt.com\/?attachment_id=1332\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1332\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> I am at the Blue Lake in St Bathans, Central Otago.\u00a0 Setting up to paint takes time and the hot day demanded the awning.\u00a0 Ominously soon after set up I was asked by a couple of people is this where the wedding is?\u00a0 I assured them it was not here and began painting &#8211; the reflections were perfect.\u00a0\u00a0 Boy racers on jetskis arrived &#8211; reflections were gone, peace was destroyed by the noisy racket and mutterings of sand in petrol tanks were heard.\u00a0 Then I was asked to move as there WAS a wedding here at 2pm!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.janetdewagt.com\/?attachment_id=1334\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1334\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Wind is an ever present reality and I <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">have learned to just go with it and not fight it.\u00a0 This is at Orepuki in Southland and as I paint I wonder w<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ho planted these trees and do they have a protection order?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.janetdewagt.com\/?attachment_id=1336\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1336\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I often paint down forestry tracks where there may be s<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">hooters\/ hunterkillers about and my brother advised me to wear blue as it is a colour unusual in the bush.\u00a0 I also have the national programme blaring on my car radio!<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.janetdewagt.com\/?attachment_id=1337\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1337\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1337\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Another weather hazard is painting in the freezing cold.\u00a0 My advice is to stand on a mat, wear good shoes, wear latex gloves inside your wool ones so your hands don&#8217;t get wet.\u00a0 Work fast and jump in the car with the heater running frozen painting in hand, to thaw out both.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.janetdewagt.com\/?attachment_id=1338\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1338\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1338\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Getting the works back&#8230;..not always an easy process.\u00a0 I have discovered that I can paint in the rain <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">for half an hour before the paint slides off the canvas.\u00a0 This is leaving Dog Island.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I have been very fortunate to combine my community arts work with painting on location and have met some amazing people who have shown me their local sights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.janetdewagt.com\/?attachment_id=1339\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Mataura River Project was a community arts project where I worked in 25 schools with thousands of children<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> and 600 sculptures celebrating their connection to this mighty river were made and exhibited at Mandeville, Southland Museum and Art Gallery and Bowen House in Wellington.\u00a0 The materials used were all being repurposed, recycled or their trip to the dump at least slowed down.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.janetdewagt.com\/?attachment_id=1341\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1341\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1341\" 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">My Piece of Nature was another community art project I undertook with the Department of Conservation and the many groups, schools and individuals who participated in these workshops used art to express their relationship with nature.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The windswept trees and the Cosy Nook paintings will be exhibited in the \u2018Coastal Murihiku\u2019 exhibition at <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">He Waka Tuia in Invercargill.\u00a0 It opens on 28 May and runs until 8 July.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">This runs concurrently with the community arts project \u201cYou Me and the Sea\u2019 which involves many young Southlanders creating work for this installation at He Waka Tuia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I hope I have given you some insight into the realities of painting on location, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Every one of my paintings are done on site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I feel humbled and privileged to think people have bought my paintings and have them in their
