New Zealand International Science Festival<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I gave a talk at this festival about my historical plastic collection.\u00a0 During the COVID lockdown I began cataloguing this huge collection.\u00a0 I have a very big shed!!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I wanted to share some of the amazing designs and objects and I devised a way of using miniature plastic figurines named ‘The Fossil Family’ (after the tin they were kept in!) to create a more personal story.\u00a0 \u00a0The Fossil Family is quite large and I have used different members of the family to explore and delve into the social and design history of individual items from the collection.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For example this is a Bakelite egg grader made by Lightning, England in the 1930’s.\u00a0 It was claimed you could grade 1500-1800 eggs per hour, that was one egg every 2 seconds.<\/p>\n

ambi Toys
\n<\/strong><\/h1>\n

ambi toys are a particular favourite of mine, not just because they were made in the Netherlands’ but also because of the simplicity and creativity of the designs.<\/p>\n

ambi ‘has become a family affair with eight eyes searching in the amazing op shops of Friesland in the Netherlands.\u00a0 But now four eyes have started their own collection and I’m jealous as they have scored some hard to find pieces!!\u00a0 It was also great to meet the creator of the ambi virtual museum who kindly gave me some back catalogues which has helped me with identifying and dating my finds.<\/p>\n

Pioneering Plastic Exhibition<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The house is full with half opened boxes, cataloguing criteria, label writing, obsessing about Boosted – an arts crowdfunding site and then repacking plastic to take on its journey to the Otago Pioneer Women’s Memorial Hall!\u00a0 The exhibition opens\u00a0 at 6pm on 19 October and will run through Labour weekend and every weekend after.<\/p>\n

Dunedin Central Rotary Club Talk
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I have talked to a lot of Rotary Clubs in my time as an artist – always good for a lunch first and then meeting really good people who are passionate about raising money for different community organisations.<\/p>\n

This time I took 3 things that signify my creative life – a painting done on location in the Waitaki Valley, a book about the Mataura River Art Project and a historical plastic baby’s teething toy designed by Hilary Page in the 1940s.<\/p>\n

The Artist’s House<\/strong><\/h1>\n

My house was featured on the front page of the Otago Daily Times in 2012.\u00a0 Formica also featured on the front page. \u00a0\u00a0 Many people have visited this house to see the amazing collections which are incorporated into the ordinary everyday fixtures of the house.<\/p>\n
